Michael from the Office shouting "Oh my GOD it's happening! Everybody stay calm!"

Now, I don't know if anyone predicted we'd be SECOND in the league, which we are by the way, in case you hadn't heard, but I know a lot of us, me included, had a lot of faith in this team during pre-season. But HATERS (joking, kinda) across the league scoffed at the Utah roster and Coach Jimmy's efforts, but the proof is in the pudding (jello?).

Jokes aside, the Royals are doing incredibly well, and while we still have a lot of season to go, it's hard to deny that this is a solid team. Not only are we winning, with our longest win steak extended to 5 games, we're playing some pretty soccer! There were obviously some issues last night, but the amount of beautiful crosses, expertly placed passes, and team synchronicity made the game genuinely fun to watch.

Royal Review Vibe Check

  • RED HOT: Utah won SIX games in the entire 2025 season. We've won 5 games so far in 8 games in 2026.

  • Silky Smooth Passes: Did y'all see the passing this game? The Royals kept their passing game TIGHT with a passing accuracy of 82%.

Starting XI

You'll notice a couple of changes in the Starting XI this match. First, we have Miyabi earning the start over Nuria Rabano, who started in the last match against Angel City. Rabano has had two starts since she returned back form injury with mixed results. While she performed incredibly well against Seattle, she struggled against Angel City, and as Jimmy has indicated previously, no starts are set in stone - players need to keep earning them week after week. And Miyabi definitely performed this week (more on that later).

Next, you'll notice that Palacios was left off the game-day roster. After the initial release of the availability report for the match, Kiana suffered a lower leg injury, and was no longer available for play. In the post-game press conference, Jimmy indicated that she should be good to go for the next match on Sunday, and it was mostly precautionary. As such, Delzer stepped in to fill that 9 spot.

Match Analysis

Overall Flow

The Royals absolutely dominated the entire first half of the match. With a whopping 74% of possession in the first half, the Royals were completely in control. I'm not sure what was going on with Houston, they did have a different starting lineup than usual, but it looked like they were just watching the Royals run around in their offensive third. Some Houston-side substitutions in the second half helped them regain some control, leading to 53% Dash possession in the second half.

Momentum Chart from FOTMOB

The Royals also out-shot their competitor yesterday, with 22 total shots to the Dash's 7. With a game like this, where Utah is in possession for such a strong majority of the game, it's not surprising to see some of these other stats:

Top stats chart:

Possession: UTA 62% Houston 38%
Expected Goals: UTA 1.95 Houston .46
Total Shots: Utah 22 Houston 7
Shots on Target: Utah 7 Houston 3
Big Chances: Utah 2 Houston 1
Big Chances Missed: Utah 0 Houston 1
Accurate Passes: Utah 367 (82%) Houston 194 (71%)
Fouls Committed: Utah 10 Houston 5
Corners: Utah 15 Houston 4
Key Stats from FOTMOB

The biggest stories here are the 367 accurate passes and 15 corners. Most of these passes came out of the back line, as the team cycled the ball around in the back looking to create openings and find ways through Houston's low block, but some of these passes were beautiful strings of give-and-go allowing the Royals to slice through the Dash like butter.

The Japanese contingent on the Royals squad adds to this chemistry. Most specifically, you can tell that Moriya and Tanaka have played a lot of minutes together. There were multiple instances throughout Wednesday's game where you could see the two basically reading each other's minds, passing without looking, and making perfectly timed runs.

Goals ⚽⚽

Cloe Lacasse (38')

🎵TWENTYYY-FOUUUR. With this goal marking Cloe's third game in a row scoring for the Utah Royals, she's no longer heating up - she's officially on fire! Cloe scored this beaut. following an impeccable assist from Mina, which slotted right between the defenders and was timed perfectly to ensure Cloe was onside when she made the pass.

For the first time since Lacasse joined the Royals in 2024, the in-stadium announcers finally played her fight song, which was an incredibly energizing moment for fans, the coaching staff, and the players. If you have any influence over the in-game announcements and you're reading this, keep it up! This is what we like to see! Fans have been fairly critical of the match-day vibes, and this is a sure-fire way to get fans on their feet and keep them coming back.

For those of you who don't know, Lacasse's fight song comes from her time at Arsenal, and fans have been eager to see it follow her to Utah. Hear the song and get the lyrics below (remember to sub out "Arsenal" for "Royals" when you commit it to memory to sing at Paxton Pub/Home on Sunday, when Cloe will absolutely score again).

Courtney Brown (88')

Courtney's goal in the 88th minute resulted in the biggest sigh of relief across the stadium on Wednesday, allowing fans to breeze through the 7 minutes of stoppage time with ease. Prior to that moment, there were some seriously nerve-wracking offensive plays from Houston, and it would have been the biggest disappointment to end the game on a 1-1 draw.

This was Courtney's first goal for Utah, one she likely will never forget. A Utah local, Courtney played for the University of Utah from 2019-2023, joining the team right when Royals 1.0 was sold to Kansas City. Earning a draft pick from Washington Spirit, Brown moved across the country and played for them for two years until she joined the Royals this pre-season.

Brown's goal was especially exciting, as she was playing in an unfamiliar position in the 9, indicating her flexibility and commitment. She scored off another lovely assist from Mina, her second of the match, in which Mina was driving down the center of the pitch, drawing in the defense before smoothly placing it at Courtney's feet for the finish.

Player Highlights

Mina Tanaka (FOTMOB Rating 8.9)

Mina was the obvious player of the match last night. In addition to her two amazing assists, Tanaka also had the most shots last night and won 6 ground duels (6 each). She played a critical role linking to the offensive line and feeding the Royal's attackers with runs and passes through Houston's back line. It was incredible watching her dance around the pitch, and if Jimmy's right in his claim that she's yet to reach her peak, she will be a franchise player for the Utah Royals. Honestly, with the way they brought in Miyabi and Narumi, she might already be the bedrock the Royals are building around.

That being said, the Royals prides (🦁) itself on being a team that is greater than the sum of its parts, meaning they aren't investing in star-power, but investing in creating a dynamic and coordinated unit. Pero... por que no los dos? I think we get both with Mina, as we saw on Wednesday with her two incredible assists.

Kate Del Fava (FOTMOB Rating 8.2)

In the 85th minute of the match, McGlynn comes out far off her line to block an offensive attack form the Dash, only to have the ball get deflected and bounce to the feet of another Dash player. Caught at the edge of her box with an attack imminent, Mandy's stuck trying to run backwards to get back into position. Luckily for her (and everyone else on the Royals side), KDF sees what's coming and steps to the line, perfectly positioning herself in the line of fire. Houston's Rader shoots straight to her, and Kate is able to block the shot, keeping the shut-out and ensuring the game stays 1-0.

This is a critical block, and its important cannot be understated. If Utah went down to 1-1 here, who knows what would have happened. Brown's goal comes just 3 minutes after this play, and the team's headspace, energy, and timing could have been completely different had they conceded a goal here.

Honorary Mention

  • Miyabi Moriya (FOTMOB Rating 7.5)

  • Janni Thomsen (FOTMOB Rating 7.9)

The Royals take on Bay FC at PayPal Park this Sunday at 2:00 PM. Watch on Victory+ or join The Throne's watch party at Paxton Pub!

Bay FC Analytical Overview

Bay FC came into 2026 with one of the most ambitious offseason makeovers in the league: new head coach Emma Coates brought in a possession-based philosophy, with high fullbacks pushing forward, wingers tucking inside, and midfield anchor Claire Hutton (a $1.1M transfer from Kansas City) controlling the tempo between the center backs. The attack looks genuinely exciting on paper: 18-year-old Alex Pfeiffer leads the team in both goals and assists, with Italian striker Cristiana Girelli and Taylor Huff also contributing as key creators. Racheal Kundananji, Bay's explosive pace threat from previous seasons, is also lurking in the wings.

The problem? Bay's recent form has been deeply inconsistent, winning just two of their last five with nine goals conceded in that stretch. The losses have been bad ones too (0-3 to Gotham, 0-2 to Washington, 1-3 to Angel City), and each time, the culprit has been the same: when Bay can't dictate possession, they struggle to cope, lacking reliable outlets and getting stretched by pressure. And despite Coates' emphasis on possession, this Bay side has really struggled to keep the ball this season.

What to Watch For

Bay wants to build slowly through the midfield and manufacture quality chances, but the Royals have now proven they can suffocate that style. If Utah can disrupt Bay's possession rhythm, their attack becomes a much smaller threat. The player to watch is Hutton. She took a lot of physical attention against Angel City, and when she was pressed tightly she struggled to find her usual influence. If KDF, Tejada, and Narumi can do the same, Bay's attack loses its foundation. Set pieces remain Utah's not-so-secret weapon and Bay's defensive shakiness in big moments makes that especially relevant.

Will We Win?

This Royals squad is playing some of the best soccer in the club's history right now, and I wouldn't bet against them on this matchup.

I'm glad you singled out Del Fava's incredible goal save. She was so cool, calm and collected on that play...just getting to where she needed to be well before she even needed to be there. She not only plays hard, but incredibly smart!
